Winter Regatta

Winter Regatta

I’m still waiting for a few good storms to start my ski season, but the sun keeps on coming out. Hard to believe that this is winter weather! After a late lunch in the harbor, didn’t want to waste a perfectly good sunny afternoon, we walked out to the breakwater to watch the boat race. Scanning the scene with my new lens, I saw four sail boats breaking away from the main pack, tacking toward the sparkling water. I knew that I had the shot. Bright sunny afternoon, no cloud, sun directly above the water … with evaluated metering, I’d get a washed out image. So I switched to spot metering mode, took the meter reading off the shimmering water surface, recomposed, saw a bird gliding into my frame, waited until it glided pass the sail boats, and pulled the trigger. During post processing, I changed the white balance to tungsten to intensify the blue, straighten out the horizon, cropped, and finally adjusted curve slightly.
