Ripples in the Sky

Ripples in the Sky

Old photo shot last year during a ski trip. Saw the sky while driving to the mountain, pulled off the road, put camera on tripods, made a mad dash on a small hill for a clearer view just in time for a few shots. Wished I had gotten to the mountain sooner. I stood there thinking, another 10 minutes drive north on the 395 … snow capped peaks against this fiery sky … well, had to settle for silhouettes.

!

I just made a test print on A+ size (13”x19”), and I’m very happy with the print quality. This is my most dramatic B&W print to date.

Will be spending the next three days in the Eastern Sierra, doing some snowboarding on Mammoth Mountain. If I can get to Mono Lake and back in the sub zero temperatures (-7°F/-21°C), perhaps I might get a good shot of Mono Lake in the winter. For those inquiring about this print, I can work on getting the prints out when I get back in the middle of next week.

Big Bang!

Big Bang!

B&W version

Went and searched for the McNaught comet tonight: couldn’t see it, but found my own comet trails …

(Note to self: hand-holding filter is not a good idea, especially during longer exposure. Need to get a 1 slot filter holder.)

Undisturbed

[f13, 1/90s, 190mm, iso 100, filter: circular polarizer]

Clear sky this evening. Knowing that I wouldn’t get anything good on the beach with no cloud, decided to put on my 70-200mm and looked for birds. Picked my spot by the creek and waited for the birds to come into my frame. This was the undisturbed water surface before a duck arrived in the foreground. I am quite happy with the colors that this lens produces.

McWay Falls Sunset

McWay Falls Sunset

[f22, 0.5 second, 22mm, iso 100, filter: 3 stops split nd]

Definitely a more challenging location to shoot. During the day, the sky was too bright and it was quite hazy; during sunset, the wasn’t enough light in the cove. My 3 slots Cokin-P filter holder creates severe vignetting at 17mm. Have yet to get a printable shot of this cove.
