Morning Rain Approaching Hanalei Bay

Morning Rain over Hanalei Bay

Spent two mornings in Hanalei Bay, hoping to catch a good sunrise. Instead, saw storm clouds and rains.

I waited for the light to break through, but didn’t see the spectacular sunrise light and colors that I was hoping for. I ended up sitting on the pier for a couple of hours, chatting with the fishermen while waiting out the rains. They talked about the variety of cloud colors during sunrises and how they love fishing here during the early morning hours. Even in the rain, this place is incredibly moody. Rain clouds on the horizon, clouds hovering over the green mountain, waterfall streaming down the side of the mountain …. What missing was a hot cup of coffee.

Sunrise over Lydgate’s Children Pond

Sunrise over Lydgate Park

Second morning on the island, got up at 4:30am and drove from Poipu to Wailua. The hotel receptionist suggested the area near the airport for a sunrise view. Didn’t want to return to the airport, I headed for Lydgate Park. When I saw the two boulder-enclosed ponds, I knew what I wanted to include them in my frame. The question was the small pond or the big pond? Couldn’t get the big pond to fit in my frame.

Sunset over Kalalau Valley

Sunset over Kalalau Valley

Sunset over Kalalau Valley.

Its difficult to capture the grandness and the beauty of this place. One has to be there in person to appreciate this view. My photo doesn’t do this place justice. Just before sunset, the light fills the green valley with golden color.

I’ve seen many dull photos of this valley taken during the day. IMHO, it would be a waste of time to come up here in the middle of the day. A sunset evening up here is unforgettable. Imagine sitting on the grass up there with a picnic basket for a couple of hours and just get lost in the view …

To see this view, drive up the Waimea Canyon Drive until the end of the road (18 miles). There are a few lookout points along the road, but none better than the last.

Kauai North Shore Aerial

Kauai North Shore Aerial

One of the must-do’s in Kauai is to take a helicopter tour of the island. I shot Kauai from the air before, but through pexiglass. This time, no window! It was quite fun leaning out into the slipstream and trying to hold the camera steady to shoot. I put my 17mm on the 10d body and the 70mm on the 5d body, and took both of them up. In the end, I got more usable photos with the 10d+17mm combo. It was difficult shooting with a longer and heavier lens while hanging out in the slipstream.

Kauai Fisherman

Fisherman

I shot this Poipu’s fisherman a few minutes after the previous photo. The clouds moved in and wrapped around the sun in a spectacular ball of light. I took a few shots, then looked around for another subject to add to the composition, found nothing. I was about to put myself in the photo, then I saw this fisherman walked right into my frame.

I saw him earlier back near the trail head, casting his line in the dark. Haft an hour later, he had caught up with me. He kept on casting his line, reeling it back in, walking up the coast and repeating the process. I waited until he got the the “right” spot and started firing after the water surface settled. He reeled his line back in, then walked out of my frame and disappeared. We never spoke; each worked quietly on his own. There was no one else out there but us. I’m glad that he was out there, adding a personal touch to my photo. For a moment, I envied his life on the island, fishing in solitude during a spectacular sunrise.

Poipu Sunrise

Poipu Sunrise

Poipu Sunrise, Kauai

Just returned from five days in Kauai. Had a wonderful time. Plenty of sunshine. Shot a few good photos. Will get around to posting some more.

This was shot during our first morning on the island. I set out for a short hike in the dark with a flash light. Although I hadn’t scouted this particular area before, it wasn’t too difficult to find the trail on the east side of Shipwreck beach towards the Makewehi Lithfied cliffs. By the time I got in position to frame this shot, the clouds had turned from red to yellow, and the sun was getting a little too high, but it was quite an experience sitting there watching the light and clouds show through my view finder.
